How To Make Campfire Pizza

Like many people, I love pizza, and I really love easy campfire pizza! This pie is so easy and tasty that you will wonder why you never made it over a campfire before. I buy my pizza dough in a bag from the deli when I make it outside because it just makes things so much more simple. The first time I made this pizza it was in my RV oven. If you know anything about RVs, you know the ovens are not the greatest, however, even in that little craptastic oven, this pizza still turned out great. The key to this recipe is keeping it simple. You can make your own dough or sauce, but I wanted this to be something you could just whip up really quick without much effort and still have it taste great.

Campfire Pizza Recipe

It is super easy and a lot of fun to make this dish over a campfire. Just toss some charcoal into the fire, make your pizza in a Dutch oven or large cast iron frying pan that has a lid, and cook for 20 minutes or so. You can use my cast iron coal chart in my book, The Culinary Camper to find out how many coals to use. The chart can be found on page 41. It is also available on the Dutch Oven Recipes Cooking Chart page on this site. For this recipe, you would use about 21 coals on top and 10 on the bottom to attain a temp of approximately 425° F. I used this amount as my base and added more coals to the top in the last 5 minutes or so to brown the top of my pizza.

Pizza Is A Family Favorite

I first started making pizza several years ago when I worked for a popular pizza chain back in college.  The thing I loved about working there, besides the free pizza, was learning how to toss the dough. It was fun to watch someone toss a ball of dough around into a pizza. It was more fun learning how to toss a pizza myself. One trick to tossing pizza do is that you want to leave it out at room temp for about 30 minutes so that you can work the dough (if it has been refrigerated). Cold dough is much more difficult to work with and shape. Use a rolling pin and cutting board to roll out the dough or just smush it out and toss it. Either way, this will soon become a family favorite.

Pizza Can Be Healthy

Besides being simple, the easy campfire pizza can be a healthy alternative by choosing your ingredients for a healthier meal. While pepperoni is a very popular ingredient, you may choose to use more fresh vegetables and low-fat cheeses along with the whole wheat dough. This will turn your pizza into a great meal that is both a treat and healthy. To save time I sometimes buy canned vegetables like sliced olives and mushrooms. This saves me the time and effort when I’m camping, but if I’m making this in my backyard, or in my oven, I often opt for fresh vegetables since they do taste better.homemade sausage, mushroom and olive pizza

Favorite Ingredients

My favorite pizza is chicken sausage, mushroom, and olives with a creamy garlic sauce. I’m sure you will be trying out your own favorite ingredients when you try this out. Make it your own, make it delicious, and make it often so you can experiment with what you like. I’ve even made a variation of this dish for breakfast (check out my Breakfast Pizza). What was my special ingredient? Eggs of course. If you have never tried eggs on pizza before, I highly recommend it.

Easy Campfire Pizza

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg store bought pizza dough (or make your own)
  • 1 c fresh or canned sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 c sliced olives
  • 1 c canned or pre-made pizza sauce
  • 1 or 2 c mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Roll out the dough on a clean flat surface, or press out in a Dutch oven.

  2. Evenly spread pizza sauce over the dough.

  3. Sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of cheese on the sauce.

  4. Place the mushrooms, olives, and sausage on next.

  5. Cover with remaining cheese.

  6. Bake at 425° F for about 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is slightly brown. If using a Dutch oven place about 21 coals on top and 10 on the bottom for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is slightly brown.
